If our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.” –2 Corinthians 4:3b-4
When WMP president Harold Mack and Board director Dean Crowder visited India in 2014, they returned with an enlarged burden for the teeming masses of people without Christ, blinded by the god of this age. Yet it was confirmed again that God uses His Word to redeem the lost, give hope to the hopeless, and dramatically change lives. “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130).
It was our Creator God, who “commanded light to shine out of darkness,” who shined in our hearts “to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). How could we shine more of that Life-giving light into 1.2 billion lives in India? How could World Missionary Press, strained to meet commitments to distributors around the world, provide ABUNDANTLY MORE of His Word to the most ethnically diverse nation on earth, with more than 2,200 people groups, 447 languages, and hundreds of thousands of villages? Half of the unreached people groups in the world are in India.
A vision for Project India was born: To challenge new contacts to be involved in printing 100,000,000 Scripture booklets for India at a cost of $3,000,000 over three years. With this in mind, another trip to India was planned for late February to accomplish three things:
• Capture on high-quality video how God is using Scripture booklets in India to transform lives and the urgent need for huge quantities;
• To meet with major ministry leaders in North India regarding the use of WMP Scripture
• To visit three recommended print shops in North India regarding possible future printings of WMP Scripture booklets.
Harold Mack, Andrew Beverly, and videographer Jordan Crowder arrived in Chennai where they were met by India Bible Literature Director E. Velayuthyam (Velu). They first visited a print shop which has been doing a lot of WMP’s contract printing in South India (photo below). Currently it is working on printing three million booklets: Help From Above, The Way to God, and The Amazing Life of Jesus Christ. A second print shop visited was printing and has now just completed production of one million How to Know God booklets.
India Bible Literature, WMP’s national coordinator for many years, receives containers from WMP and also manages WMP’s contract printings in India. They are responsible to fill requests for WMP Scripture booklets coming from ministries/distributors throughout India—requests coming directly to them, as well as requests forwarded from us.
Later the three met up with a team from another ministry in India, which included an evangelistic family Dean and Harold had met on their previous trip. With a zeal for reaching others with the Good News, they have a unique approach. The family goes into a village and sets up a music system in a public area. The daughter dances to Christian songs, drawing a crowd. The father then preaches a message, after which they hand out Scripture booklets. This often results in new Christians and a new church. To date they have shared the gospel in more than 100 villages.
Every Home Crusade in Chennai operates a prayer center used by prayer warriors from throughout the city. Harold shared in a time of devotions before heading out to visit a new house church in one village and accompany the EHC team on distribution outreaches in three villages.
The Story of a Fisherman
While Harold spent the day with EHC, Brother E. from the other India ministry and two others escorted Jordan and Andrew to a fishing village several hours away. Brother E. had arranged with believers in the village to share their testimonies and act out their stories for video. Earlier he had told them the story of the fisherman who came to Christ through a Scripture booklet which he had initially rejected. When he then shared Christ with his family, they all believed. His brother-in-law had been crippled by demons and unable to walk. The local pastor cast the demons out, and the man was able to walk again. Both the man and his wife soon came to Christ after this healing.
Now the fisherman and his brother-in-law work together on their fishing boat catching fish, crabs, and shrimp to provide for their families. They took Andrew and Jordan out on their fishing boat with his family to record their testimonies while Brother E. translated. An extra special blessing was that the brother-in-law and his wife were both baptized beside the boat while they filmed. That was not planned by Brother E., but it was planned by God. What a blessing!
Another reenactment involved a man who slammed the door in the face of an evangelist passing out Scripture booklets. However, the young man’s son took one of the booklets and trusted Christ. His father then became very ill and unable to work. The son would sit at the foot of his father’s bed and read the Scripture booklet to him. He then brought the pastor to his home to pray for his father. His father was healed, and turned to Christ. His wife also became a believer.
The team flew to New Delhi, a city of more than 18 million in North India. Harold presented the ministry of World Missionary Press to leaders of 16 major ministries gathered by Trans World Radio. These were ministries with networks of pastors numbering from hundreds to tens of thousands. One can only imagine how many Scripture booklets these ministries could use over time!
OneHope Board member Dave B. and Tom H., Vice President of Global Operations, who are involved with printing the Book of Hope in many languages for worldwide distribution and do extensive printing in India, had recommended two printers in Delhi as possible contractors for future WMP printings in the north of India. WMP Coordinator Brother Velu (IBL) recommended a third printer. Based in North India, these printers are also able to export printed materials into Nepal—a capability Harold had long been searching for. It was a joy to visit their plants and talk over possibilities for the future.
It was obvious that God had heard all the prayers going up for this strategic trip, answering and abundantly blessing beyond what was even hoped. God’s Word predicts “a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne” (Revelation 7:9). How many millions will be from India? “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined” (Isaiah 9:2).

[You can shine God’s light in India by your involvement or by sharing Project India with a friend. As God puts it on the hearts of current partners to “extend their reach” by giving above and beyond, and as new partners learn of and join our efforts, with God’s help our goal of 100 million booklets for India within three years will be realized.]
